B.Sc. (Honours ) in Occupational Safety and Health (Add-on)
Course Description:
Would you like a career with variety in your job every day ? Do you like working with people? Are psychology and people’s behaviour of interest to you? Would you like to become an expert in investigating and preventing workplace accidents ?
If you answer “yes” then you should consider studying the B.Sc. (Honours) in Occupational Safety and Health. This degree has international recognition from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and qualifies you to manage safety and health within organisations both in Ireland and abroad.
You will be taught using innovative teaching methods including group work and solving workplace safety issues using simulated scenarios and state of the art technology. The course has a very practical emphasis and you will see safety in action by visiting a wide variety of workplaces.
Occupational Health and Safety is a critical area of responsibility in the modern workplace. It concerns how you work, and the conditions provided for you in which to work. This add-on Honours Degree course builds on previous experience and knowledge gained in the ordinary degree in Occupational Safety and Health (or a related qualification). Particular emphasis is placed on the management aspects of health and safety modules previously studied. Graduates will be able to understand and apply legislation governing the management and operation of health and safety procedures. They will be trained to identify and evaluate workplace hazards, and to motivate employees and employers to carry out their responsibilities.
This add-on degree is structured over one year and includes the following modules:

- Safety and Health Law
- Work placement and Enquiry Based Learning
Semester Two
- Honours project
- Hazard and Risk Management
- Management of the Workplace Environment
- Constructor and Contractor Management
- Safety Management Systems
- Environmental Management
Key Skills:
The course will provide the following key skills to enable graduates to:
- Protect workers from injuries and fatalities
- Prevent illness caused by work, and promote health and wellbeing
- Advise employers on health and safety law
- Work in groups to solve workplace safety issues
- Implement and monitor safety management systems in the workplace
- Communicate and promote safety awareness
- Prepare and coordinate internal and external safety assessments
Further Study Opportunities
Graduates may progress to the one year taught M.Sc. in Environmental Health and Safety Management at IT Sligo or other cognate taught postgraduate programmes.
They may also be progress to postgraduate research in Health and Safety.
