Bachelor of Business in Accounting (Add On)

Course Description:

The course is designed primarily who have a previous qualification in business and accounting such as the Higher Certificate in Business in Accounting.  The course is 1 year in duration leading to the award of an ordinary degree in Business/Accounting.  The course aims to provide advanced knowledge of accounting that may, if the student wishes, provide a route into professional accountancy.

  • Computer Applications for Business
  • Company & Partnership Law
  • Financial Accounting 3
  • Management Accounting 2

Electives:

  • Basic Taxation Principles
  • Introduction to Financial Markets and Institutions
  • Personal Finance 1

Key Skills:

  • Accounting skills needed to secure employment in accounting/finance
  • A practical knowledge of computerised accounting systems
  • A solid base for further study in the accountancy discipline
  • The possibility of professional exam exemptions 

Career Opportunities:

Graduates have secured employment in a wide variety of areas in both the private and public sector. Graduates will be competent in producing accounts and financial information for business organisations.  Previous graduates have progressed to careers as accountants, financial analysts, investment managers and in banking.  Graduates can fill any of these roles and will be very highly regarded by accounting, finance and business employers.

Other entry requirements:

In addition to a Higher Certificate in Business students must demonstrate a competence in accounting.  Students are expected to have achieved 50% or above in their previous accounting subjects.

Further Study Opportunities:

A majority of student progress to an honours degree such as the Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Accounting and Finance at IT Sligo.  An option then exists to study for professional accounting examinations with one of the professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland.
